Winter Skincare Menu

Lately, the skin I have known for the last 24 years has left me rather puzzled. The normality in my body has been thrown out the window and I have been left with a complexion I find extremely foreign. My limbs are drier than the most barren of deserts and my face, which normally contains most of the world oil stores- is quite dehydrated. I can only put this change down to the dramatic drop in temperature ( to reference Game of Thrones- Winter isn’t just coming, it has come.) or I have had my skin texture messed with by Aliens.

While the dramatist in me wishes it was the latter of the two (hello, movie franchise), I have had to adapt my skincare routine to counteract the changes. I have also mentioned many a time that I suffer from acne, so I have continued to use a lot of the products I was already using in my routine. In my morning skincare routine I have introduced the Simple Spotless Skin anti-blemish Moisturiser to give me the extra moisture my skin needs, while also treating any sneaky spots. My lips have also been chronically chapped (sah not cute) so most mornings i tend to slather on a generous layer of Paw Paw balm to keep my lips hydrated. Lately I have been loving the Suvana Certified Organic Paw Paw & honey Balm. This Balm is natural and does not contain chemicals that can sometimes be found in Paw Paw balms/ointments.

The skin on my arms and legs has been hideously dry, flaky and irritated. I have found that even my tried and true body creams are not remedying the situation. Fear not, I have found solace in Palmer’s Intensive Relief concentrated cream. This moisturiser is seriously rich, thick and soothing. Also, it contains no fragrance, colour, parabens or phthalates and will heal the skin while not messing with the scent of your perfume (is it just me or is anyone else completely crazy with that?).

Most of the new additions have been slotted seamlessly into my evening skincare routine. The addition of a moisturising toner (People for Plants Mist Toner), Serum (Indeed Laboratories Hydraluron) and night cream (Antipodies Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream) as well as an intensive lip repair treatment (Blistex intensive repair) has really been working miracles on my skin. I have even noticed a change in the amount of breakouts I have been getting.

What is your Winter Skincare staple?

New in- Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lip colour.

Just encroaching into my favourite season of the year (Winter here in the land of Aus, for all you Northern Hemisphere peeps) I am enthusiastically unpacking all of my knitted jumpers, dusting of my 200 pairs of ankle boots and sorting through my extensive scarf collection. Cosmetics-wise I am pulling out all my Full Coverage foundation, packing away my bronzer and embracing the Pale.

One huge trend over winter in the Northern Hemisphere was the Matte Lip. Honestly, nothing excites me more than a bold, matte lip colour. I love the colder months for the fact I feel completely at ease rocking a burgundy lip at 8am. Many cosmetic brands have jumped on the trend of the Matte Lip and now, some of the collections are being dropped here in Australia to coincide with the beginning of winter.

One particular release I was waiting for was the Bourjois Rouge Edition 24 hour Lip colour. With the likes of Viviannadoesmakeup raving about them, I knew they were going to be a winner (Lady knows her Lip colours!).

I was not disappointed.

The consistency of well, velvet. This little gem glides on with no effort. Light texture yet build-able with the promise of 24 hour wear. What more could a girl want? The application is easy with a small wand, I do however recommend starting the application in the centre of the lip, working the colour out to the edge of the lip line as the wand is quite dense with product. Although probably not necessary, I do still like to line my lips before applying (probably because I am a stickler for a neat lip application!).

After a night of eating, drinking, dancing (sweating) and forgetting to reapply, this baby was still present on my lips when I woke. Yes, I beautysinned. No makeup was removed that evening (forgive me!). I did notice when my narcissism took over and I checked my reflection in everything I could that this colour handles longevity with ease, not flaking or becoming patchy as the evening progressed. It just- fades or almost sinks into the lip.

Currently I own the shades Frambourjoise (velvet 02) and Hot Pepper (velvet 03), I have a feeling a few more shades are not far off being in my collection.

Have you tried these? What do you think?

Until next time-

Lets help fix that Hangover face.

Parched, head pounding and trying to work up the courage to move from the cocoon of regret and self pity. We all know what that means- you are all kinds of hungover. We have all been there, partying that little too far the evening before and no matter how much you think that kebab at 3am helped, you are probably going to look worse for wear the next day.

This was me in a nutshell Sunday morning. After a marvelous evening including a dinner party and a night out on the town. Which regrettably did involve mixing a few too many types of alcohol and not getting off to sleep until the wee hours of Sunday morning. Needless to say- the better half of the next day was spent with two good friends (in a similar state of hungover) on the couch eating take away breakfast and watching How I Met Your Mother.

Sometimes we have the luxury of not needing to be semi-alive and presentable for an event whilst hungover and the day can be spent in a onesie, hidden away from the world. Unfortunately, I was not in this position. I was expected to be at a dinner for my Grandfathers Birthday. Now, to avoid the lecturing that normally accompanies being hungover in the presence of my relatives. I needed to look human, stat.

Firstly I dragged myself into the shower and gave myself a good scrubbing. Soap and Glory ‘The Scrub of Your Life’ exfoliating body scrub was my weapon of choice, bringing a bit of glow back into my limbs.

Following that, something serious needed to be addressed. That something serious was my face. I took to it with my GlamGlow Supermud Clearing mask to suck out any imperfections and popped on a little Origins GinZing eye cream. On went a little of my Lumi Magique base to brighten up my complexion, a tinted moisturiser and masked the bags I had packed under my eyes with my NARS Radiant creamy concealer in Vanilla. To finish of the look I popped on some mascara and cream blush. Lastly, I  ran a flesh toned pencil (NYX wonderpencil in Light) in my waterline to brighten up my eyes.

Presto, I was back to looking like myself. My family was none the wiser.

Ok, they totally cottoned onto the fact. Probably because I had as much personality as a damp cloth. But hey, at least I looked acceptable. Nailed it.

Till next time,

Em x
