The effortless Smokey Eye.

Lets be honest here, not everyone has the patience and/or the time to create the perfect smokey eye every time they apply their makeup. A flawless smokey eye can sometimes take me 20 minutes when working with many a shadow, liner etc.

Lately I have been loving the shadow sticks. Most major cosmetic companies have a variation. Essentially it is just a cream eyeshadow in stick form.

IMG_1036

All it takes to get a flawless smokey eye is 5 minutes. Apply the stick directly to the mobile lid and up to the crease. ( slightly over if you have hooded eyes) Then take a small fluffy blending brush (like a MAC 217) and blend upward slightly towards the brow bone. I then take the blending brush and run under the lower lash line with whatever product is left on the brush to tie the look together.

Sometimes I leave the process there, for a more intense eye I set the cream with a similar shadow and highlight the brow bone/ inner corner. I tend to stick to bronze/brown shades to enhance my blue eyes.

Latest Obsession: Charlotte Tilbury Cosmetics.

Charlotte Tilbury is a magnificent Celebrity makeup artist who is phenomenal at her job. Definitely on my list of favourite makeup artists, I have been waiting to get my hands on her signature makeup line for a long time. I had settled into the idea that I would have to wait until I travel to the UK, not knowing it was possible to get it sent to Australia. So when I was perusing net-a-porter.com (for a gift for my Mothers Birthday) and understandably I found myself sidetracked looking at the beauty section, I almost wet myself with excitement to find I could get Charlotte Tilbury cosmetics sent to me here in Oz.

I spent ages deciding which products to get, it was a very agonising decision. In the end I went with palette that started my obsession, the Dolce Vita. I was also surprised to find I could get the palette in a set consisting of the Dolce-Vita palette itself, a blusher, mascara, liquid liner, lip liner, lipstick and lip gloss, all tucked in a signature cosmetics pouch.

IMG_1004

The packaging is so sleek and glamorous. I almost didn’t want to use them! I am also finding it hard to throw out the boxes in which the products came, they are gorgeous too!

The Dolce-Vita quad is incredibly pigmented and the shadows blend seamlessly. It is also great to have a guide to using them to create the signature eye look on the back of the packaging.

IMG_1018 IMG_1011

I think the blush is my favourite of the set. (Cheek to Chic swish and pop blusher in Ecstasy) The outer section is used on the top of the cheekbones to add structure and the centre colour is purposely for the apples of the cheeks.

IMG_1007 IMG_1008

I have been using the Full Fat Lashes 5 star Mascara daily since i got it. The Feline Flick eyeliner is lovely and thin and gets super close to the lash-line.

The Perfect nude pink lip is achieved with the Lip Cheat lipliner in Pillow Talk, the K.I.S.S.I.N.G lipstick in Penelope Pink and the Lip Lustre in seduction.

Apologies on how bad my skin looks in this picture! Having a skin freak-out at the mo.

I am really loving every product I got. The makeup bag you get if very roomy and super adorable. The price is a little exxy, but completely worth it in my opinion. I am saving my pennies to acquire more!

The Statement Winged Liner.

One thing I don’t post about often enough is the fact that I love applying Makeup on others. It is one of the most satisfying feelings creating a look on someone else and having them love it as much as you do. It is really rewarding.

I was extremely excited when my gorgeous friend Bec asked me to do her eye makeup for a Gala Dinner. This is dinner was a pretty swanky, thousands of Delegates from major mining companies all congregating at one event. It is a big deal.

I was not only excited by the fact she asked me, but the fact she wanted to make her eyes the staple of the makeup look. This might not sound like a huge deal, but Bec is a total bright lipstick babe. It was a complete step out of her comfort zone to go with a bold eye and nude lip. The brief I got was “dramatic wing” and I didn’t plan on disappointing. We were also on a time limit, being a Wednesday night.

I started off by priming the eye with Smashbox Photofinish Lid Primer and applying some tape to the outer edge of the eye (using the outer corner of the eye and the tail of the brow as a guideline). I then applied Makeup Geek Vanilla Bean eyeshadow over the entire lid as a base colour. I then applied Makeup Geek Peach Smoothie into the crease as a transition colour on a Sigma E40 blending brush.

I then used the Smashbox Full Exposure palette to deepen the crease. First I applied M5 into the crease with an E25 Blending Brush. I then followed that by applying M6 into the crease on a Sigma E45 Tapered blending brush. I then went back in with the E40 brush I used initially to blend out any harsh lines.

I then sprayed my E55 brush with a little Fix+ and applied Loreal Infaillible pressed eyeshadow in 002 Hourglass Beige onto the lid area meeting up to the crease. I then went back in with my E45 and buffed the lid colour into the crease.

I then took my Revlon Colourstay Liquid liner in Blackest Black and created a dramatic wing and popped some Makeup Geek shadow in Corrupt on top for intensity. I then removed the tape and popped a mix of M5 & M6 from the Full exposure palette on the lower lash line to tie the look together. We then applied a few generous coats of mascara to the upper and lower lashes and finished the look off with a set of half false lashes in the outer corner.

Lipstick- MAC Hug me.

July Favourites.

Well it is that time of the month. Ew, what were you thinking, I was talking about Monthly favourites time. You’re Gross. *winky face*

Normally I film these things, but I decided to see how my Favourites fair on the ol’ blog. I also have a nasty case of Laryngitis which has now left me with no voice at all.

Lets dive right in, shall we?

IMG_0886

My first two favourites are skincare items. The I have absolutely been digging the Simple spotless skin anti-blemish moisturiser. This magic stuff has been a godsend for my skin. As you will know if you have been following me on here and on YouTube, I have to constantly battle with my acne prone skin. So a moisturiser that also fights acne is something I am going to be interested in! I do love the brand Simple in general. Their products are gentle and effective.

The second skincare item is an eye cream from Indeed Laboratories called Eysilix. This eye cream is extremely lightweight yet moisturising and a little goes a long way. My concealer sits wonderfully over top of this product. I love the serum Hydraluron by this brand and the eye cream definitely doesn’t disappoint.

A rediscovered favourite is the Fragrance Allure Sensuelle by Chanel. I have been wearing Balenciaga’s Florabotanica scent for months now and I thought it was time for a bit of a change in the winter months (also, it was getting to the point that people were smelling my perfume and automatically knowing it was me without seeing me first). My Partner Tristan bought this for me on our Anniversary, I was so proud he picked up such a lovely scent all by himself! It is a heavier scent, very sexy and very Chanel.

A favourite that has not left my side is my Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Blonde. No other brow pencil compares in my opinion. I have posted a comparison with the Anastasia Brow wiz previously, defs check that out!

A mascara I have been loving is the YSL Shocking mascara. I dont know what it is about this mascara, it is just on point. I haven’t used a mascara that separates and volumises like this product. I have it currently in sample size however I will positively be purchasing the full size on completion.

Lipstick wise, I haven’t been able to stop using MAC Kinda sexy. Ever since my obsession with finding the Kylie Jenner Lip first began, I have been using the shade daily. It is the perfect nineties beige nude, I am IN LOVE.

I have also been loving the Bobbi Brown skin foundation. I am in the shade Porcelain. This foundation is light but covers brilliantly. It has been my daily go-to, I also like to use this to mix with my other foundations to lighten them for use in the winter months. I was a bit skeptical at first, but this foundation actually does look like skin! It also lasts really well on my oily skin.

For my nails this winter I have been reaching for my Mecca Cosmetica nail polish in the shade Acai. It is the perfect deep berry shade. I really love the formulation of these polishes, they last well on my nails (which is a big deal in my day job!).

What have you been loving this month?

So you are feeling a tad ill…

For the last couple of days I have been suffering from a nice flu. Rocking a super sensual man-voice and nasal passages so blocked I can barely breathe, its been crappy lovely. In an effort to recuperate and not continuously wallow in my own self pity ( Lets face it, we all revert back to 5 years old when ill.) I decided to dip into my bag of tricks for making myself feel better and I thought I would share some of them with you.

1. Rest.

This one is just common sense, really. Your body is fighting off a virus so our parents were right in making us stay in bed. I am lucky in the fact that I work during the day for my family Business and my dad is a super germ-a-phobe. Therefor, I am quarantined and ordered home to recover.

2. Keep up fluids.

Another pulled from the mum cabinet. This is very important. Even if you can’t stomach water, drink tea or anything else you can bring yourself to swallow.

That sounds slightly dirty. Moving on.

3. Medicate.

Have some painkillers. If you have a sore throat, use an anti-inflammatory spray. I have never been one to ride something out. I’m all about elevating as much pain as possible.

Now that I have covered all the essential tips, here are some personal tips I do when I am feeling less than mediocre.

4. make a smoothie.

Chuck as many healthy things in as you wish. I find it much easier to down a smoothie over a meal when I am feeling sick. My favourite is a mix of berries, Banana, spinach, Coconut milk, Almond milk, Greek yogurt, Honey and a splash of store bought green juice.

5. Yet, eat a Big Mac if you feel like it.

I tend to stop eating when I am sick, but I also have weird cravings. Which can lead to my Boyfriend getting me weird things at odd times. I think if you are feeling like a big mac, your damn body obviously needs it (contradictory somewhat to the smoothie tip, but hey -the heart wants what the heart wants.)

6. Cuddle a pet.

I have 4 rescue cats and for some reason, they know when I am sick. It doesn’t matter if I am in bed or on the couch I will have at least 2 of them laying with me at all times. It is like a furry hot water bottle, you really cannot fault a good animal hug.

7. Take a long shower.

When I am sick the only place I feel somewhat human is in the shower. I dont know if I am part mermaid (I wish, I am a Pisces!) but the water seems to rejuvenate me. Spend as long as you need in there, or until the hot water runs out.

8. Apply a face mask.

You are probably thinking, ‘What? That’s the last thing I feel like doing” but I tell you now, it will make you feel better. Why not get a product like the Biore 1 minute self heating Charcoal mask. I apply this while I am in the shower and have the energy to do so.

9. Watch a few good movies.

Disney movies or whatever will make you feel better. I have been loving watching the Disney Movie channel on Foxtel. I have also watched a few Brat-Pack 80’s movies such as St Elmo’s Fire and the Breakfast club. Oh that Judd Nelson, #babe.

10. Keep the makeup to a minimum.

If you have to leave the house while sick, keep things simple. I know I barely have the energy to put on pants while sick, let alone a face full of makeup. Maybe just try a tinted moisturizer, mascara and a cream blush.

What is your Feel better Remedy when Ill?

Lets talk contour.

Contouring is the perfect way to give the face structure and dimension when applying makeup. Blanking out your face with foundation and concealer can diminish the natural hollows of the face, this is where adding colour back in is most important, to avoid looking ghostly and washed out. Contouring is the method of darkening the points of your face that would be shaded if you were in direct sunlight. On most faces these points include the temples of the forehead, under the cheekbones (hollows of the cheek if you were pulling a pouty face), under the jaw line and either side of the nose.

Contouring can be achieved with both cream and powder products. For a more subtle contour, I would go with a cream product. Some companies have stick contour colours, but for a beginner I would go with a stick foundation a few shades deeper than your natural skin tone, such as the Maybelline FitMe stick foundation.

I personally prefer to contour with powder products. If I am aiming for subtle dimension I will go with a pressed powder a few shades darker than my skin tone. In summer, I like to use a light matte bronzer. It is always important to use a matte powder, we are trying to essentially hide parts of the face, using a shimmery colour would attract attention to that area. I would keep the shimmer for highlighting.

When creating a dramatic look I love using cool toned, ashy contour colours. I find that they seem to suit my fair skin and dont make me look like I have a muddy streak down the side of my face. I have really been loving the NARS contour palette in Olympia and as a cheaper alternative, I do love using NYX blush in Taupe. If I am absolutely going to town on my makeup, I do also like to use a grey/purple eyeshadow to contour, such as Tease from the Naked2 palette or Makeup Geek’s “unexpected’ eyeshadow.

My golden rule with contouring is build the colour. If you go in with a brush loaded with product, it is going to make the blending process a lot harder. I would also recommend investing in a good contour brush if you can. I love my Real Techniques contour brush, it is relatively inexpensive and gets right into the hollows of the face. A fluffy eyeshadow brush can also be used for a strong contour. If you are looking for super definition, try holding a business card just under the cheekbone to get that crisp line and then blend out from there. Another thing to keep in mind when blending is always blend in an upwards direction. Never bring the colour down towards the chin, this will make the face look sunken and drag the face down.IMG_0878

New in- Benefit “They’re Real” Push Up Liner

20140706-170323-61403698.jpg

The new “it” liner.

I had seen a lot of hype on many beauty blogs, YouTube channels and Instagram surrounding the new Push up Liner from Benefit. A gel liner in Pen form, the first of its kind.

I tend to steer away from Gel liner. It is notorious for transferring on my hooded eyes so I normally stick to liquid eyeliner. Curiosity however, got the better of me with this product. I figured with such a precise applicator I would be able to get close enough to the lash line to prevent tranferring to my eyelid. I had seen demonstrations of the liner, and the appeal of an easy Cat-eye was too much for me to resist.

Living in a Country town, I knew it would be hard for me to get my hands on the new launch. Luckily, one of my good friends was in Melbourne and was kind enough to brave the crazyness of Myer to pick one up for me (Thanks Bec!)

20140706-170324-61404466.jpg

The formula is quite pigmented and creamy and the tip of the pen is soft, flexible, extremely thin rubber, allowing it to get close to the lash-line with ease.  The pen is lightweight and long enough to have a steady grip. I did not experience any flaking and it took a decent amount of eye makeup remover to get it off at the end of the day.

Much to my disappointment, the gel did transfer to my upper eyelid. Although not as badly as other Gel liners I have used (possibly due to being able to get close to the lash-line). I will be trying a black shadow over the top of the liner to see if it will set the liner and prevent transferring.

Overall I do love the concept and the product itself. I think it will be brilliant on a majority of eye-shapes that do not experience Transferring. The team at Benefit always do a great job of marketing and the aura around this Launch was great. I do think this is one of those products you will need to try for yourself, as I think it will work differently on everyone.

My hunt for the perfect Kylie Jenner Lip Colour.

One woman, one lipstick, one mission. I have been determined for a few weeks now to find the perfect Kylie Jenner lip colour.

Unless you have been living under a rock (or your sister hasn’t texted you the picture of her, captioned- “what the hell is this lipstick?!?! Find it for me, it is amazing”) Then you should have witnessed a Kylie Jenner nude lip selfie somewhere on the internet. It is the most gorgeous dusty pink/beige nude lipstick I have ever seen. Honestly, it causes unnatural anxiety within me that I don’t know what shade/brand it is. Without sounding creepy, her lips look like giant, soft pillow clouds that I just want to nap on.

OK, that sounded hideously creepy- Moving on.

Being the obnoxiously stubborn determined person that I am, I have done my fair share of research into the topic and it seems I am not alone in my quest. There is as many theories attached to the Kylie Jenner lip as there is to bigfoot. Everyone has an idea of what they think the shade is, yet I cannot seem to find any concrete information anywhere. A forum seems to think she has answered the question on her twitter and it is a lipliner from MAC called “whirl” (which conveniently is out of stock at the moment, hrmm) while others swear it is layers over layers of different lipstick brands and shades.

After getting mildly frustrated at not being able to find the answer to such a simple freaking question, I decided to take the matter into my own hands. If I couldn’t find the answer, I would find something damn similar. It looks quite apparent that she is wearing a matte shade and has slightly overdrawn the natural shape of her lips, making them appear fuller.

Two shades from MAC come to mind. It is possible that it is “Velvet Teddy” (some forums have also suggested this), I tend to think it leans more towards the shade “Kinda Sexy” a gorgeous neutral Dusty pink matte colour. MAT 7, from the new Maybelline collection could also be used as a substitute. Although it is slightly leaning more towards a beige nude rather than a dusty pink nude, I think it is a great alternative for those wanting to achieve the look on a budget.

Do you have the perfect Kylie Jenner shade?

New in- Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lip colour.

IMG_0809

Just encroaching into my favourite season of the year (Winter here in the land of Aus, for all you Northern Hemisphere peeps) I am enthusiastically unpacking all of my knitted jumpers, dusting of my 200 pairs of ankle boots and sorting through my extensive scarf collection. Cosmetics-wise I am pulling out all my Full Coverage foundation, packing away my bronzer and embracing the Pale.

One huge trend over winter in the Northern Hemisphere was the Matte Lip. Honestly, nothing excites me more than a bold, matte lip colour. I love the colder months for the fact I feel completely at ease rocking a burgundy lip at 8am. Many cosmetic brands have jumped on the trend of the Matte Lip and now, some of the collections are being dropped here in Australia to coincide with the beginning of winter.

One particular release I was waiting for was the Bourjois Rouge Edition 24 hour Lip colour. With the likes of Viviannadoesmakeup raving about them, I knew they were going to be a winner (Lady knows her Lip colours!).

I was not disappointed.

The consistency of well, velvet. This little gem glides on with no effort. Light texture yet build-able with the promise of 24 hour wear. What more could a girl want? The application is easy with a small wand, I do however recommend starting the application in the centre of the lip, working the colour out to the edge of the lip line as the wand is quite dense with product. Although probably not necessary, I do still like to line my lips before applying (probably because I am a stickler for a neat lip application!).

After a night of eating, drinking, dancing (sweating) and forgetting to reapply, this baby was still present on my lips when I woke. Yes, I beautysinned. No makeup was removed that evening (forgive me!). I did notice when my narcissism took over and I checked my reflection in everything I could that this colour handles longevity with ease, not flaking or becoming patchy as the evening progressed. It just- fades or almost sinks into the lip.

Currently I own the shades Frambourjoise (velvet 02) and Hot Pepper (velvet 03), I have a feeling a few more shades are not far off being in my collection.

Have you tried these? What do you think?

Until next time-

Lets help fix that Hangover face.

Parched, head pounding and trying to work up the courage to move from the cocoon of regret and self pity. We all know what that means- you are all kinds of hungover. We have all been there, partying that little too far the evening before and no matter how much you think that kebab at 3am helped, you are probably going to look worse for wear the next day.

This was me in a nutshell Sunday morning. After a marvelous evening including a dinner party and a night out on the town. Which regrettably did involve mixing a few too many types of alcohol and not getting off to sleep until the wee hours of Sunday morning. Needless to say- the better half of the next day was spent with two good friends (in a similar state of hungover) on the couch eating take away breakfast and watching How I Met Your Mother.

Sometimes we have the luxury of not needing to be semi-alive and presentable for an event whilst hungover and the day can be spent in a onesie, hidden away from the world. Unfortunately, I was not in this position. I was expected to be at a dinner for my Grandfathers Birthday. Now, to avoid the lecturing that normally accompanies being hungover in the presence of my relatives. I needed to look human, stat.

IMG_0796

Firstly I dragged myself into the shower and gave myself a good scrubbing. Soap and Glory ‘The Scrub of Your Life’ exfoliating body scrub was my weapon of choice, bringing a bit of glow back into my limbs.

Following that, something serious needed to be addressed. That something serious was my face. I took to it with my GlamGlow Supermud Clearing mask to suck out any imperfections and popped on a little Origins GinZing eye cream. On went a little of my Lumi Magique base to brighten up my complexion, a tinted moisturiser and masked the bags I had packed under my eyes with my NARS Radiant creamy concealer in Vanilla. To finish of the look I popped on some mascara and cream blush. Lastly, I  ran a flesh toned pencil (NYX wonderpencil in Light) in my waterline to brighten up my eyes.

Presto, I was back to looking like myself. My family was none the wiser.

Ok, they totally cottoned onto the fact. Probably because I had as much personality as a damp cloth. But hey, at least I looked acceptable. Nailed it.

Till next time,

Em x
