A fleeting weekend away.

The weekend just gone was a roller-coaster, to say the least.

After receiving news my Grandmother had a severe, underlying medical issue that needed immediate attention, requiring her to travel to our capital city (600kms away), we were all a little stressed.

My Dad and I also made the long trip. Luckily about an hour out of the city we got the news she was awake and the surgery had gone incredibly well. For a 94 year old woman, she is extremely fit and healthy, not looking a day over 65 with “the heart of a 50 year old, who has lived an easy life” according to the doctor. We then eased up a little and enjoyed the rest of the drive.

The hillside were in full blooms of yellow and purple, littered with grazing sheep and the occasional llama.

apologies on the blurry picture! The best my iPhone could capture at 110km/h!

I chose to wear my Senso boots for the drive, which was probably not the best choice for footwear. It’s ok, whatever discomfort I had was made up by the fact I looked fabulous.

We then stopped at the river in Northam (an hour out from the city) to take our photo, which is a family must when any of us are traveling to Perth.

That squint.

Once we got to Perth we went straight to the hospital. For someone who had gone through a major operation, nanna was in extremely high spirits. Even the following day when we visited before leaving she was chirpy. Apart from all the tubes attached to her, you wouldn’t even know she had an operation!

I will always remember that Nanna said the reason she has lived so long is because she “never let anything get to her” and “spent a lot of time laughing”.
Something I have always tried to live by.

I have a picture of her in ICU, but she would kick my butt if I put it on the internet!

The next day after out hospital visit we set off back on our long drive, but not before I managed to weasel in a trip to spotlight to pick up some millinery supplies! (This week is Race week in our city, so there will be some posts on that later in the week.)

I did also pick up a few Yankee Candles, as I didn’t know we could buy them here in Aus!

July Favourites.

Well it is that time of the month. Ew, what were you thinking, I was talking about Monthly favourites time. You’re Gross. *winky face*

Normally I film these things, but I decided to see how my Favourites fair on the ol’ blog. I also have a nasty case of Laryngitis which has now left me with no voice at all.

Lets dive right in, shall we?

IMG_0886

My first two favourites are skincare items. The I have absolutely been digging the Simple spotless skin anti-blemish moisturiser. This magic stuff has been a godsend for my skin. As you will know if you have been following me on here and on YouTube, I have to constantly battle with my acne prone skin. So a moisturiser that also fights acne is something I am going to be interested in! I do love the brand Simple in general. Their products are gentle and effective.

The second skincare item is an eye cream from Indeed Laboratories called Eysilix. This eye cream is extremely lightweight yet moisturising and a little goes a long way. My concealer sits wonderfully over top of this product. I love the serum Hydraluron by this brand and the eye cream definitely doesn’t disappoint.

A rediscovered favourite is the Fragrance Allure Sensuelle by Chanel. I have been wearing Balenciaga’s Florabotanica scent for months now and I thought it was time for a bit of a change in the winter months (also, it was getting to the point that people were smelling my perfume and automatically knowing it was me without seeing me first). My Partner Tristan bought this for me on our Anniversary, I was so proud he picked up such a lovely scent all by himself! It is a heavier scent, very sexy and very Chanel.

A favourite that has not left my side is my Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Blonde. No other brow pencil compares in my opinion. I have posted a comparison with the Anastasia Brow wiz previously, defs check that out!

A mascara I have been loving is the YSL Shocking mascara. I dont know what it is about this mascara, it is just on point. I haven’t used a mascara that separates and volumises like this product. I have it currently in sample size however I will positively be purchasing the full size on completion.

Lipstick wise, I haven’t been able to stop using MAC Kinda sexy. Ever since my obsession with finding the Kylie Jenner Lip first began, I have been using the shade daily. It is the perfect nineties beige nude, I am IN LOVE.

I have also been loving the Bobbi Brown skin foundation. I am in the shade Porcelain. This foundation is light but covers brilliantly. It has been my daily go-to, I also like to use this to mix with my other foundations to lighten them for use in the winter months. I was a bit skeptical at first, but this foundation actually does look like skin! It also lasts really well on my oily skin.

For my nails this winter I have been reaching for my Mecca Cosmetica nail polish in the shade Acai. It is the perfect deep berry shade. I really love the formulation of these polishes, they last well on my nails (which is a big deal in my day job!).

What have you been loving this month?

The brushes you should own.

20140717-212213-76933559.jpg

Just like painting on a canvas, with the right tools you are going to create a beautiful piece of art. The same principle applies to the process of makeup application.

I am a strong believer of investing in good quality makeup brushes. Not only will they change the way your makeup looks, they last an incredibly long time with the correct care. That being said, I understand that not everyone wants to spend a fortune on a brush for every single step of the makeup application process. I understand first hand how costly that can be. So I have narrowed it down to a handful of multitasking brushes that a makeup novice could put all their trust into.

The flat Eye Blending Brush.

Think a MAC 217 or a Sigma E25. A slightly tapered blending brush with a pinched tip. Something that can be used to not only blend shadow out on the eye, but can be used flat to pack a shadow on to the lid.

The small Face Brush.

Think a Real Techniques Expert face brush or a small kabuki. Something that is small but dense. A brush like this (especially something slightly oval shaped while looking at it Birds-eye-view) is great for not only blending in foundation, but is small enough to blend in concealer and get into the hollow of the cheeks with a cream contour colour. I have also at a pinch used this brush to apply blush and it did a great job. I do recommend cleaning or at least wiping off the brush while using for multiple coloured products.

The Angled Brush.

Think a Real Techniques Brow Brush or a Sigma E65. A small angled brush is great for a multitude of uses. Products such as the Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade (gel brow colour), brow powders and Gel eyeliner all apply well with this type of brush. A clean angled brush can also work really well with concealer, either to spot conceal imperfections or to clean up the edge of the lip after Lipstick application.

The Powder Brush.

Think the Sigma F20 or the Real Techniques Powder Brush. These brushes are obviously great for the application of both loose and pressed face powders. A big powder brush can also be used for application of powder and Mineral Foundation and the application of bronzer. Using a big brush for bronzer minimizes the risk of applying too much product and looking streaky or muddy. I have also used a brush like this for cheek colour as it deposits enough colour for a healthy glow.

The Pencil Brush.

Pencil brushes can be sourced easily. I use the Sigma E30. This brush can be used for precise eyeshadow application, such as a cut crease or inner corner highlight. It is also perfect for smudging out eyeliner and cream eye products.

The Optionals.

These are the brushes you can do without, but it is nice to have them in your stash.

  • Eye Shader brush (for packing eyeshadow onto the lid.)
  • Blush Brush (go with an angled one, as it can also be used for contouring.)
  • A spoolie. (for brushing through the brows or de-clumping the lashes)

Other kit items you might want to consider.

  • A sponge applicator ( I’m talking, BeautyBlender or a Real Techniques Miracle complexion Sponge). These are great for seamlessly blending out foundation, concealer, creme blush, creme highlighters and creme contour colours. You could even purchase this instead of a face brush. I have been using my BeautyBlender more than a brush lately.
  • An eyelash curler. This is going to make you look more awake and give the appearance of larger eyes.
  • Tweezers. Not only to remove the pesky stray hairs, but these are a godsend when fighting with applying false lashes.

There is another tool you already have but probably underutilized. Your Hands. The hands are a great applicator for almost everything. Foundation and concealer, tapping on creme cheek products, applying powder and creme highlighters, blending out lipstick and patting on eyeshadow. I tend to forget I can use my hands (derp?) but hey, God gave them to us for a reason?

Is there a brush I have missed that you think is a “Holy Grail?”

New in- Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lip colour.

IMG_0809

Just encroaching into my favourite season of the year (Winter here in the land of Aus, for all you Northern Hemisphere peeps) I am enthusiastically unpacking all of my knitted jumpers, dusting of my 200 pairs of ankle boots and sorting through my extensive scarf collection. Cosmetics-wise I am pulling out all my Full Coverage foundation, packing away my bronzer and embracing the Pale.

One huge trend over winter in the Northern Hemisphere was the Matte Lip. Honestly, nothing excites me more than a bold, matte lip colour. I love the colder months for the fact I feel completely at ease rocking a burgundy lip at 8am. Many cosmetic brands have jumped on the trend of the Matte Lip and now, some of the collections are being dropped here in Australia to coincide with the beginning of winter.

One particular release I was waiting for was the Bourjois Rouge Edition 24 hour Lip colour. With the likes of Viviannadoesmakeup raving about them, I knew they were going to be a winner (Lady knows her Lip colours!).

I was not disappointed.

The consistency of well, velvet. This little gem glides on with no effort. Light texture yet build-able with the promise of 24 hour wear. What more could a girl want? The application is easy with a small wand, I do however recommend starting the application in the centre of the lip, working the colour out to the edge of the lip line as the wand is quite dense with product. Although probably not necessary, I do still like to line my lips before applying (probably because I am a stickler for a neat lip application!).

After a night of eating, drinking, dancing (sweating) and forgetting to reapply, this baby was still present on my lips when I woke. Yes, I beautysinned. No makeup was removed that evening (forgive me!). I did notice when my narcissism took over and I checked my reflection in everything I could that this colour handles longevity with ease, not flaking or becoming patchy as the evening progressed. It just- fades or almost sinks into the lip.

Currently I own the shades Frambourjoise (velvet 02) and Hot Pepper (velvet 03), I have a feeling a few more shades are not far off being in my collection.

Have you tried these? What do you think?

Until next time-

Three Designer Products worth the Money.

It can be a bit daunting purchasing a designer name Makeup product. Forking out a ridiculous amount of money for something you can get at the chemist for half the price can seem outrageous. Especially in Australia, where you basically need to sell your first-born to pick up a bottle of Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation.

I have always spent a pretty penny on makeup. So after purchasing high end brands such as NARS and Lancome for years, the step up to the likes of CHANEL, YSL and Dior came relatively easy to me.

Through all my perusing, I have discovered three products which I will always now, repurchase. It is very rare for me to find something I like enough to repurchase as running a beauty blog means you are always buying and trying new things.

IMG_0628

The first product is a CHANEL foundation called Vitalumiere Aqua. It is a watery, dewy/satin finish that is very lightweight but can be built to a medium coverage. As a girl who normally likes to stay on the Matte side of the spectrum, this was out of left field for me. I really like the way it sits on my skin. I have been suffering from quite bad acne and scarring as of late, so it hasn’t been my go to of the moment, but once my skin is back to its normal self it will be all back on that face. You know what I’m sayin.

The second product is a mascara. First picked up on a trip to the US, Dior Diorshow mascara has become a mascara draw staple. On my first trip to Sephora, where makeup is half the price of what it is in Australia, I was excited to find that Dior mascara was cheaper than MAC and even L’Oreal back home. So naturally, i left with a basketful of products. Diorshow was one of them. This baby works wonders for my lashes. Volume and length without clumpy-ness and flaking after hours of wear. It is still my fallback lash weapon of choice.

The final designer staple in my collection is YSL Touche Eclat in #2. A highlighting concealer, it is perfect for making the skin ultra radiant. I like to apply this in a triangle shape under my eyes and up my cheekbones, on my cupids bow and forehead for that ‘Kim Kardashian’ highlight. As a girl on the pale side, this type of highlight can be difficult to achieve with concealer alone. So a product such as the Touche Eclat is brilliant.

One thing I recommend with Designer products is try before you buy. You are spending a lot of money on these items- get matched, check that you like the way it looks and the consistency. There is nothing worse than spending a lot of money on something and then getting home and absolutely hating it.

Till next time-

Lip & Nail options for Valentines Day.

I am not going to pretend that I am not impressed with a good Nail & lip combo. I dont think that it is too ‘matchy- matchy’ or too much colour. I think it is the way to bring cohesion to a look, without looking over done. I mean really, if a woman can manage to match her nails and lips- she obviously has her life together. I count the days I manage to put on a pair of matching socks as a life-win.

So I thought, in honour of the day celebration love- I would pop together a few combos for you.

The ‘Barely- There’ Pink.

The most demure of the combinations. Perfect for a low key movie date or get together with friends. I have chosen both a Lip and Nail colour that are beautifully sheer in application. On the lips – Revlon Colourburst Lip Butter in Pink Lemonade and for the nails go with OPI Nail Lacquer in ‘In the spotlight” pink.Image

The ‘Dusty-rose’ Pink.

For those wanting to go the subtle route with a little extra kick. A pretty, dusty pink is your option. Sexy without being ‘in your face’ this colour would be perfect for a first date or drinks with the girls. On the lips – NARS Lipstick in Dolce Vita and on the Nails – Essie Fun in the Gondola.

Image

The Candy Pink

The cute and sweet option. A bold colour without going too over the top. The perfect hue for a dinner date. On the Lips- Maxfactor Lipstick in Magenta Divine and on the nails- Opallac UV Colour in Cosmolicious.

Image

The Coral.

For those wanting to break the theme. A pinky orange is the perfect hue for those who dont play into the whole ‘Valentines day’ thing, or simply just dont want to wear pink or red. A colour for those wanting to be different. On the lips –Maybelline Coloursensational Lip colour in Coral Crush and on the nails- Essie Come here!

Image

The Classic Red.

Completely classic and effortlessly sexy, the Red lip is the perfect shade for making a statement this Valentines Day or wanting to feel like a damn sex goddess. As you would know from watching my videos or reading this blog frequently, It is no lie I love a red lip. On the lips- Estee Lauder Double Wear Lipstick in Stay Scarlett (of course.) and on the nails – Essie A-list

Oh and I almost forgot-

The ‘ none of these appeal to me’ colour.

Ok, Fussy- pants. What about Rimmel Lasting finish by Kate Lipstick in 106 Rosetto. This hard to explain, Bright- yet deep pink is the choice for you.

I hope you all enjoyed this post and I hope you have a great Valentines Day! I will be spending mine on the couch with my Boyfriend, a Pizza, a Movie and a few Beers.

What are you doing for Valentines Day?

Till next time-
